Jean-Luc Godard, is a recipient of this year's lifetime achievement Oscar. The presentation dinner is due to take place on 13 November. Godard, the leading light of the French new wave, electrified the world cinema with his 1960 picture Breathless, before going on to make film such as Le Mepris and Weekend. In a career that has lasted over 50 years he has paid a homage to mainstream films, by referencing them, while at the same time stylistically challenging the classical narrative model. For the organisers of the Oscar dinner one big question remains, will Godard turn up? Apparently, no one can find him and at last May's Cannes film festival in support of his picture, Film Socialisme, he bailed out at the 11th hour. As the "Where's Godard?" buzz sweeps Hollywood, it's kind of neat to know the great modernist ain't playing the game.
