"Angelopoulos’ sixth film, the Golden Lion award winning Alexander The Great (O Megalexandros, 1980), is a perfect case in point. Covering most of the thematic concerns that have occupied Angelopoulos in his forty years of filmmaking, it’s a deeply allusive meditation on myth, history and modernity, political ideology and national identity, and the demands made of its audience extend far beyond its 199 minute running time." Emperor Asoka was ruler of Magadha in the 3rd century BC and after waging a savage war on the neighbouring kingdom of Kalinga he finally witnesses the consequences of his actions, a dreadful reality that causes him to renounce his war like ways and dedicate himself to spreading the teachings of Buddha. Ancient Inuit legend has it that two brothers set out on a quest to save their community from an evil shaman, Amaqjiuaq and Atanarjuat. When the former is killed only Atanarjuat (the fast runner) is left to continue the journey and defy the darkness that has descended upon his people. Using local cast and crew and filmed entirely on the sea ice this is a beautifully epic tale; both stunning to look at and utterly enthralling. Highly recommended and intelligent escapism. find out more...

BEOWULF (2009)

The legend of Beowulf, the bravest of the brave, a fearless warrior of such skill that his name has become myth. When Beowulf is called by the king of the Viking lands to rid the people of the monster Grendel our hero duly obliges, but even he may be no match for Grendel's lethal, temptress of a mother. I have one small question...why!?
