ALI (2002)

Certification15 Our Rating

A big glossy biog of Muhammad Ali at his peak, and though 'When we were Kings' has to go down as one of the most riveting sport documentaries that there has ever been this is still a hugely accomplished movie, thanks largely to the slickness of Mann's film making and a superlative performance by Will Smith. Ali was not a huge hit at the cinema, perhaps because so much is known about the great man already, but this a powerful and highly watchable movie, oh and it has some awesome fight scenes to find out more...

American football has become a very wealthy and powerful den of iniquity. Veteran coach Tony D'Amato has seen it all come to pass, during the many highs and lows of the Miami Sharks, but the corruption, greed and general lack of respect is beginning to wear him out. Oliver Stone's latest offering is powerful and dark, with some grippingly tense scenes on and off the pitch, but it seems strangely lacking in any depth of characterisation, instead plumping for a series of cliched individuals. The pest exterminating business isn't doing as well as Morris Buttermaker would like, but when he's offered the chance to coach a worse than hopeless little league baseball team he's sees the opportunity to painlessly supplement his income….how mistaken can one man be. Directed by the same genius behind ‘School Of Rock' and in essence a remake, Bad News Bears singularly fails to achieve the giddy heights of Linklater's previous outing, though there are still some amusing low blow, anti-PC lines find out more...

Down-and-out former prodigy Randy Daytona is sucked into the crazy world of unsanctioned, underground clandestine ping pong tournaments when the FBI recruit him to bring down archvillain and ping pong fanatic, Mr Feng. Like a bizarre pastiche of ‘Enter The Dragon', "Balls Of Fury" is considerably more fun than, let's be honest, it should be. find out more...

From the guys who gave us talking poo comes a tale of two idiots who stumble across a sporting sensation combining basketball with baseball. Throughout the film there are running gags for South Park fans and the comic pair Trey Parker and Matt Stone pull off lots of puerile gags to keep fans happy. The plot is laced in American culture and some of the gags and stadium shots are wasted on a British audience. Not exactly highbrow, but good for a couple of laughs. find out more...

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women's movement, the 1973 tennis match between women's world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men's-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex bat find out more...
