EL CID (1961)

One of the very finest epics produced, equally impressive in terms of script and spectacle. Heston is aptly heroic as the 11th Century patriot destined to die in the fight to evict the Moors from Spain, Mann's direction is stately and thrilling and Miklos Rosza's superb score perfectly complements the crisp and simple widescreen images. Sobriety and restraint, in fact, are perhaps the keynotes of the film's success, with the result that a potentially risible finale, in which Cid's corpse is born find out more...

An authentically bloody chronicle of the last Apache leader as recorded in the memoirs of one of the cavalrymen who hunted him down. The film covers his fight to preserve the lands of his people and the growing admiration and understanding of his white adversaries. It's all enough to make the red earth of the Moab desert curdle with blood and shame. Fine play from Patric, Duvall, Studi and Hackman in this great biopic. find out more...

A truly epic epic and winner of 7 Academy Awards. Lawrence serves British colonial interests during the First World War by uniting the Arabs against the fast collapsing Ottoman Empire. Stupendous cinemascope drama with a cast of thousands and some of cinema's most famous shots; Sheik Ali's emergence from the desert haze and the storming of Aquaba for example. This is the director's cut, a more coherent version than the original cinema release. find out more...

In the early seventies Venice beach California was a hairy place to go surfing, ruled by the Z-Boys, a group of hedonistic wave riders who weren't prepared to share the beach with anyone. The film follows the Z-boys pioneering transition from surfing to skateboarding, and what a cheesy sorry mess they make of things. The original documentary of a similar name is a considerably more gripping and inspiring way to pass the time, though it lacks the glossy, cliché ridden teen drama aspect of this. find out more...

Brad Pitt adopts a dodgy accent to portray up-himself Austrian Heinrich Harrer. Accompanied by David Thewlis, the self-obsessed climber makes an attempt on the Himalayas, gets captured and incarcerated in a British POW camp, escapes, then sets off on an odyssey through sweeping plains and air-brushed sunsets, finally ending up in Tibet. Befriended by a young Dalai Lama, Harrer is eventually able to wallow in the smug self-satisfaction of a man who's "found himself". It all looks very pretty, but find out more...

After a rather long and semi-interesting introduction dealing with Shackleton's family life and his attempts to raise money for the expedition the movie really kicks off when the expedition starts. Awesome scenery and high jinxs on the seas and ice as the shipwrecked crew survive almost 2 years in horrendous conditions without one death. Although the movie misses out on the problems landing on Elephant Island, much of the essence of the boat trip to South Georgia (eg running out of freshwater) a find out more...

A gripping, Oscar nominated, reconstruction of the rise of the Baader-Meinhof Group, a bunch of radical terrorists who rose in the mid-70s using military means, arson, bank raids, assassinations and kidnappings, to attempt the overthrow of the German state, many of whose personnel had their roots in the country's Nazi state. find out more...
