‘The fing I like about Sean Connery is he's a Man's man, know what I mean?' Well, after watching this, I'm not sure how he hasn't become an icon of camp cinema. The ambitious storyline exists in a world separated into two zones: The Vortex, a land where intellectuals and scientists live the life eternal in lush surroundings, and the desolate outer world, ravaged by war and pollution and inhabited by ugly layabouts who live in fear of the wrath of Zardoz, an angry suspiciously absent god. Sean plays a rebellious Brutal, that's what you're called if you don't live in the Vortex…, who is determined that life should be a little kinder to him and seeks to address the obvious imbalance in the world. Only thing is, he's only got his determination and a cute little red leather outfit to help him. Dated, unimaginative and irrelevant, Zardoz represents a curious blip in the stellar careers of Connery and Charlotte Rampling. But visually this is a tour de force.
