A dysfunctional family has to deal with their issues. A Pittsburgh English Professor and widower, Lawrence, is depressed with his job, uninterested in his pupils and chasing a publishing deal. His lonely high achieving teenage daughter, Vanessa, needs to chill out and his n'er do well brother, Chuck, tries to help her. Janet, an ex-pupil and medical doctor, is interested in Lawrence, but backs off.
