American teenager Jason is obsessed with Hong Kong cinema, particularly the kung fu classics. On finding an antique Chinese staff in a pawn shop - a weapon that turns out to belong to legendary sage and warrior the Monkey King - Jason, lost relic in hand, unexpectedly finds himself transported back to ancient China, where, with the help of his eclectic, but skilled, new friends, Lu Yan, Silent Monk and Golden Sparrow, he must overcome the many who wish to stop him returning the staff to its true owner and, by doing so, break an ancient curse. A who's who of the best martial artists in modern cinema, 'The Forbidden Kingdom' is an entertaining (and kiddie friendly) mystical adventure.
