Powerful drama set during the 48 hours in the run-up to the Battle of the Somme, following a group of still-wet-behind-the-ears British soldiers as they prepare for attack. Alternately exhilarated and petrified, the true magnitude of what the naive young squaddies are about to face only hits them as the moment is upon them. Paul Nicholls ("Mad Jaw" from Eastenders) is surprisingly good as 17 year old Billy, through whose eyes the events unfold.
