Has wonder boy Will finally shot himself in the foot with this sci-fi-western-comedy? If you're a die-hard devotee of the undeniably talented Mr Smith then probably not, but there's just far too much going on for most people. Taking the lead character from a little-known '60's TV series as his hero, director Sonnenfeld has turned Captain James T. West (Smith) into a renegade gun-slinger, operating in a Jules Verne-style world of weird and wonderful gadgets, and teamed him up with nutty professor character Artemus Gordon (Kevin Kline). On a mission to find the evil General Bloodbath, the pair find the trail leading to ruthless mastermind Dr Loveless (Kenneth Branagh), who's only half the man he used to be but is plotting to overthrow the United States anyway. Add some flying saucers, lots of high-tech special effects and some buddy-buddy comedy and you get, well, mass confusion really, but at least they look like they're having fun.
