Kenny's at it again, this time it's one of the Bard's comedy romances which gets the movie makeover, updated to the 1930's and turned into a semi-musical. King Navarre asks his three friends and fellow Oxford undergraduates to join with him in forgoing the joys of women for three years so that they can concentrate on their studies. A sensible idea it would seem and all heartily agree, but the arrival of the Princess of France and her entourage place the weak willed young bucks in a dilemma. The premise and the adaptation are not as appalling as they sound and as always with a Branagh film, it looks great, a wilfully old fashioned romantic comedy and none the worse for that.
