It's the winter of the Cold War. Tensions between the two super powers are at their peak when a US bomber is accidentally ordered to drop a nuclear weapon on Moscow. The pilot of the plane refuses to be swayed by verbal commands for withdrawal and the action becomes split between the crew of the bomber and the frantic negotiations between American leaders and Russia. Recorded live, Fail Safe is an incredibly tense and gripping production and though the cold war is over (or certainly not as simple) the all pervasive fear of such a catastrophe is still palpable. Excellent drama.
