Set during the 1920s in West Virginia, Matewan is a small mining town whose workers have responded with a strike to the coal company's announcement of a wage cut. Thoughtful, carefully shot film. Gives a convincing story of how people can slip through the gaps in society. Stays realistic without falling into despair, mostly due to the lead actor's performance. He keeps you caring.
