The original television series version following the crew of a German WW2 U-Boat as they live together, hunt Allied shipping and are preyed on themselves. The tension, claustrophobia and their fear leap out of the screen and totally avoids any sense of nationalism in what would have been fatal for this superb production.

'Until now, we've only touched the surface', that's what they say anyway. Apparently there's a lot of undiscovered stuff down in the deep blue sea that up until now, mankind just hasn't had the know-how to get a look at. Expect to see stuff that will have you leaping out of your armchair, shouting 'What the bloody hell is that?!' and 'Jesus, that thing looks like a bogey with fairy lights on it!'. In 1996 the Workers' Educational Association set up classes for sacked Liverpool dock workers in order to help them set down the history of their battle. Channel 4 decided to commission a work on the event and so began a three year process, involving both Jimmy McGovern and Irvine Welsh, in a labour of love by the Dockers that saw their work becoming a film in the summer of 1999.
