AJAMI (2010)

Certification15 Our Rating

Ajami is an area of Jaffa where Arabs, Palestinians, Jews and Christians try to live together in an atmosphere that is -to say the least - electric. Omar, an Israeli Arab, struggles to save his family from elimination by a gang of extortionists. He also courts a beautiful Christian girl, Hadir, but marrying her is far from obvious. Malek, an illegal Palestinian worker, tries to collect enough money to pay for his mother's operation. Dando, an Israeli cop, does his utmost to trace his missing bro find out more...

Inside this conventionally structured biopic resides an extraordinary story of an extraordinary man. William Wilberforce was the parliamentary spokesman for a group of radicalised young Evangelists (and Quakers), who despised the money politics and corruption of late 18th Century UK politics and who fought for many reformist policies, the most notable of which was the one this film annotates, the abolition of slavery, a process that took years of political skulduggery and the slow passage of find out more...

Based on the legend of the Bell witch, An American Haunting tells the story of the Bell family who claimed to be tormented by an unseen presence through noises, disembodied voices and physical attacks that focused primarily on their youngest daughter. Are the Bells being haunted by a malignant, supernatural force or is the culprit closer to home? Unfortunately, a great cast and atmospheric locations do little to lift this film above the hum-drum. find out more...

Set during the 1980's in Belfast, we follow two uneasy business partners, one Catholic the other Protestant, as they attempt to corner the lucrative market in hairpieces with the help of a dangerously unstable wig salesman. An Everlasting Piece is a valiant attempt at offbeat but socially aware British comedy by the director Barry Levinson, better known for movies such as 'Rain Man' and 'Good Morning Vietnam'; Can't say he really hits the spot but the film is not without charm. find out more...

Bit of an oddity, this one. Ostensibly made for TV, Angels In America has a distinctly cinematic aesthetic that belies its ambitions to surpass its medium. Like Six Feet Under and to a lesser extent, '24', the series could easily play as a movie if not for its gargantuan running time (this one clocks in at 6 hours...). Set in Reaganite America, the central plot follows two gay men, both living in the closet, dealing with the burgeoning presence of AIDS in their day-to-day existence. The prevalin find out more...
