Painter Modigliani, an Italian Jew, has fallen in love with Jeanne, a beautiful Catholic girl. The couple have an illegitimate child, but Jeanne's bigoted parents send the baby to a faraway convent to be raised by nuns. On the eve of WW1 famed German art critic Wilhelm Uhde retreated from the pressures of urban life to stay in a small village just outside Paris. Here he noticed some stunningly vibrant artwork only to discover that it was done by his somewhat cuckoo cleaning lady.
