Fanis, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics, recalls his childhood growing up as a Greek boy in Istanbul and the time spent with his shopkeeper grandfather learning about life and, in particular, the art of cooking. It's the off-season at the lonely Beauregard Hotel in Bournemoth, and only the long-term tenants are still in residence.
