An excellent black comedy, handsome thriller and a tall story that keeps you guessing as it unwinds. The genuinely ridiculous plot (a man pays a couple of goons to 'pretend' to kidnap his wife in order to get his paws on his in-laws' 'ransom' money) is completely credible as mighty plans fall apart, spiralling ever more beyond the protagonist's control and leaving us marvelling at the complex stupidity of human nature. A modern classic.

The superbly laconic Murray excels in this beautifully scripted fantasy. He plays a cynical TV weatherman, sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day festival, only to find himself trapped, reliving the same day endlessly. His only escape is trying to win over his beautiful producer. Very, very funny!

Ken does the tourist bit while Ray chases skirt and rues the accidental killing of a child on his first and last job. Then Ken gets the word, and it's not what he expected. Excellent courtroom comedy starring Joe Pesci as an offbeat just-qualified lawyer, dispatched to the Deep South to defend his young cousin (and friend) from a bogus murder charge. Pesci is superb, as is Marisa Tomei, his nasal New York fiancee who's sassy performance peps up the whole thing and won her an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

David Thewlis delivers an incredible performance as the clever and sarcastic Johnny. On the run from reality he turns up at his old girlfriend's house in London, where he proceeds to cause havoc. An inspired mix of script and improvisation with masterful direction, Leigh has taken a dark and inward look at life on Britain's bottom rung. Superb.
