This is an unsentimental, brutal and a breathtakingly beautiful film. The fact that it is described as a docu-drama is a credit to the performances of the children and the directoral vision of Bahman Ghobadi. A group of orphaned Kurdish children live on the poverty line in a village on the Iran-Iraq border. Doing anything they can to make money, the children work in markets, carry tyres, and work for smugglers though are often cheated by their employers. Working in extreme conditions, they feed

FREAKS (1932)

A very strange little number which was released, then immediately withdrawn in 1932 to remain banned for over fifty years. Still pretty disturbing today, despite the triumph of the various aesthetically-challenged "freaks" over their so-called normal tormenters, showing the revenge taken by a group of circus freaks on a beautiful trapeze artist and her strongman lover after they have tried to kill a midget for his fortune.

GEORGE WASHINGTON (2000)

A slow, lyrical series of vignettes, often banal, but always poetic, about life one hot summer in a decaying Deep South (North Carolina) small town for a tight-knit, predominately black, group of impoverished semi-rural children on the cusp of adolescence and responsibility. The plot, for what it matters; a child's game goes astray and one is accidentally killed, trapping the children in a lie that slowly pulls them apart. George is the handicapped (his skull hasn't fused) introspective, but inw
