CATCH-22 (1970)

Certification15 Our Rating

Adapted from the classic, absurdist, anti-war novel by Joseph Heller. "Catch-22" is the story of Yossarian, a pilot who trys to opt out of flying bombing missions by being declared insane, the catch being that anyone trying to avoid bombing missions by being insane must be sane. This dark classic catches much of the flavour of the book, the insanity, the corruption and the absurdity of war. Think MASH, but non-linear - flawed but awesome. find out more...

Grant is in uncharacteristic mode as a skiving, drunken bum seeing out WW2 on a South Sea island. Bribed into coast watching for the Aussie Navy, he takes to his task quite happily until the arrival of a shapely French schoolteacher and her seven small charges. A light-hearted saccharine romance. find out more...

However, on the advice of some fellow marines, Woodrow fabricates a story which elevates him to the status of war hero. A delightful, if slightly sentimental by modern standards, satire from Preston Sturges. find out more...

Bizarre black comedy with more than a touch of '60's surrealism. Satirising the absurdity of British Army conventions useless Officer Goodbody leads his troops behind Egyptian enemy lines to construct a cricket pitch in order to impress a visiting VIP. John Lennon is superb in his 1st film role as someone other than a Beatle. find out more...

The Virgin Soldiers is a bawdy look at life in Britain's conscript army of the 50s. Private Brigg (Hywel Bennett), for example, when he's not filling in forms or engaging the Malaysian bandits, is out on manoeuvres with a Chinese dance-hall girl named Juicy Lucy, who is supposed to be a lady of easy virtue but, to Brigg's delight, is a lady of no virtue at all. Brigg also sets out on that most dangerous of all military operations - an affair with the Sergeant Major's daughter (Lynn Redgrave). find out more...
