Ridley Scott directed epic that gives the definitive version of the Columbus story. The lush scenery, superb casting and top-notch direction don't quite make up for it being overlong, but on the whole Scott (and Depardieu) have painted a wonderful and absorbing picture. A British made, 1950s epic charting the sinking of the unsinkable. On April 10th 1912, the luxury liner Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage. Four days later, it sank in just 2 hours 40 minutes, needlessly claiming the lives of 1,500 passengers and crew. A group of abducted Africans break free from their shackles aboard a Spanish slave ship, the Amistad, so setting the scene for a lengthy courtroom drama played out against a backdrop of 19th Century slavery. Matthew McConaughy is the noble young lawyer fighting for the slaves' freedom, while Anthony Hopkins is mesmerising as decrepit former President John Quincy Adams. In 1996 the Workers' Educational Association set up classes for sacked Liverpool dock workers in order to help them set down the history of their battle. Channel 4 decided to commission a work on the event and so began a three year process, involving both Jimmy McGovern and Irvine Welsh, in a labour of love by the Dockers that saw their work becoming a film in the summer of 1999. Herzog's epic movie about a man's obsessive attempt to bring opera to the Indians living deep in the Peruvian jungle. To do this he must take a steamship/tub way up the Amazon river system, a monumental task, at one point involving transporting it over a not unconsiderable hill, with the help of a system of pulleys and massed Indian labour.
