Madonna doesn't try to steal the show and consequently this turns out to be an excellent film. In 1943, with the males away fighting, The All American Girls' Professional Baseball League was formed to keep the National Baseball League running. Hanks is the real star as the cynical manager/coach who learns to love his team. A comic and touching story highlighting many of the contradictions that working women face. Giuseppe Tornatore directed this grand-scale portrait of life and love over several decades in the small town in Sicily where he was born. We see a number of important historical events through the eyes of young Peppino, watching the fortunes of his town and his family rise and fall. While open to accusations of nostalgia, superficiality and indulgence the film is something of a feast for the senses.

CATCH-22 (1970)

Adapted from the classic, absurdist, anti-war novel by Joseph Heller. "Catch-22" is the story of Yossarian, a pilot who trys to opt out of flying bombing missions by being declared insane, the catch being that anyone trying to avoid bombing missions by being insane must be sane. This dark classic catches much of the flavour of the book, the insanity, the corruption and the absurdity of war. Think MASH, but non-linear - flawed but awesome. find out more...

In a small Nazi-occupied Czech town childless Josef and his wife Marie hide Jewish ex-boss David in their small flat whilst coping with the unwanted friendship of ex-employee and collaborator Horst. Brilliant, bizarre, and very dark. find out more...

When low budget indie Jewish Deep South melodrama ‘Home For Purim' gets the potential Oscar nod the cast and crew, some of them blindly naïve in the glare of the fickle empire that is ‘Hollywood', are swept along by the resulting hype and frenzy. Christopher Guest gets the gang back together for another gently satirical mocumentary side swipe; clever, witty and beautifully performed ‘For Your Consideration' is a typically charming and understated gem from the people who brought you, and for the find out more...
