Despite the melodramatic nature of the plot, the performances of the three leads are subtle and engaging. These are not characters to like, but they are fascinating nonetheless. 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' (skillfully adapted from the book of the same name) is a modest but thoroughly engaging thriller. Set in a gloomy modern Sweden, the atmosphere is tense, the characters authentic, whilst the mood is sombre and slightly dreamlike. Don't be fooled though, this is a psychologically brutal film addressing themes such as incest, sadism and violence, particularly against women.
