EL CID (1961)

One of the very finest epics produced, equally impressive in terms of script and spectacle. Heston is aptly heroic as the 11th Century patriot destined to die in the fight to evict the Moors from Spain, Mann's direction is stately and thrilling and Miklos Rosza's superb score perfectly complements the crisp and simple widescreen images. Sobriety and restraint, in fact, are perhaps the keynotes of the film's success, with the result that a potentially risible finale, in which Cid's corpse is born find out more...

Following on from 'Elizabeth' this sees her a more confident and assured, in firm control of her court, but still troubled by the bothersome Mary Queen of Scots and facing a war with Catholic Spain that few believe she will survive. "Elizabeth The Golden Age" is a beautifully lit, sumptuously dressed dogs dinner of a movie, a fine cast wasted on a shamelessly lazy script and created more in the style of a fashion shoot than a film. An authentically bloody chronicle of the last Apache leader as recorded in the memoirs of one of the cavalrymen who hunted him down. The film covers his fight to preserve the lands of his people and the growing admiration and understanding of his white adversaries. It's all enough to make the red earth of the Moab desert curdle with blood and shame. Fine play from Patric, Duvall, Studi and Hackman in this great biopic. find out more...

A truly epic epic and winner of 7 Academy Awards. Lawrence serves British colonial interests during the First World War by uniting the Arabs against the fast collapsing Ottoman Empire. Stupendous cinemascope drama with a cast of thousands and some of cinema's most famous shots; Sheik Ali's emergence from the desert haze and the storming of Aquaba for example. This is the director's cut, a more coherent version than the original cinema release. find out more...

This lavishly photographed and costumed action-drama-epic sticks to what we know of Genghis's early years, although that's not much, telling the story of how a young tribal boy overcame many obstacles, including slavery, to become a legendary conqueror. The widescreen suits this 'big sky' country and there is something remarkably authentic about the yurts and the costumes. Chosen for marriage, at the age of nine, by a female child, Borte, while he thinks he's doing the chosing, she becomes one o find out more...
ROB ROY (1995)

Neeson dons a kilt to play Scotland's legendary hero in this rousing Highland adventure. John Hurt plays the arch enemy Marquis he must defeat, and Roth is magnificently over the top as the cunning henchman out to destroy the MacGregor clan. Breathtaking scenery and some full-on battle scenes. find out more...
