AND THE BAND PLAYED ON (1993)

The story of the discovery of the AIDS virus, from the early days in 1978, when San Francisco gays began dying from unknown causes, to the identification of the HIV virus. Bigots spoke of a gay plague, scientists fought for the kudos of being first to identify the cause, and disagreements beset San Francisco's gays over the closure of the bathhouses. The film, quite rightly, deals with these issues.

ANGELS IN AMERICA (2004)

Bit of an oddity, this one. Ostensibly made for TV, Angels In America has a distinctly cinematic aesthetic that belies its ambitions to surpass its medium. Like Six Feet Under and to a lesser extent, '24', the series could easily play as a movie if not for its gargantuan running time (this one clocks in at 6 hours...). Set in Reaganite America, the central plot follows two gay men, both living in the closet, dealing with the burgeoning presence of AIDS in their day-to-day existence. The prevalin

A dramatisation of the spy Guy Burgess's school days at Eton, showing the cruel and rigid system that educated the leaders of the day. Extremely convincing in its detailing, including Everett's portrayal of the young, exuberant, homosexual Guy Burgess. A modern British cinema classic.

BEAU TRAVAIL (1998)

A sergeant-major finds himself threatened by the heroism of an attractive new recruit and, fuelled by resentment, envy and hate, becomes obsessed with plotting the young man's downfall. Though little is spelt out explicitly in this tale of repressed emotion leading to murderous jealousy, the film is accessible and clear throughout. The director's concerns are with how a wide open colonial outpost may become a prison, how men cope with an all-male society and how the physical can mirror the metap
