Stallone is more stocky than Rocky in this brooding corruption drama, playing Freddy Heflin, the half-witted sheriff of a quiet New Jersey suburb that's been all but taken over by bent cops. Heflin either doesn't notice or doesn't care about their small-time crooked capers, until one of Manhattan's not-so-finest, Murray Babitch, shoots dead a couple of black motorists. Intense thriller with Fishburne as the undercover cop trying to bring down the big boys and Goldblum excellent as Fishburne's lawyer-turned-dealer partner. As Fishburne realises what a political pawn he has become, he has to re-examine his past to establish his motives. Utterly absorbing filmmaking with a hip hop soundtrack to match.

Stylish chiller thriller with Denzel Washington as homicide detective John Hobbes, who gets the heebie-jeebies at a spate of murders bearing all the trademarks of serial killer Edgar Reese - because Hobbes himself watched Reese put to death in the gas chamber. Forced to confront facts which go against everything the hardened cop knows to be true, Hobbes finds himself on the trail of an unseen entity which can take over anyone it fancies. Darkly X-Files-ish.
