In the shared courtyard of a house in Mali's capital, two interlocking trials take place, one describes the disintegration of a couple's marriage, the other the inept and deceitful policies of the World Bank and the IMF; but as pleas for common sense and decency swirl through the building, the simple necessity of life continues to dominate the communal courtyard. Both a beautifully observed drama and a keenly knowing satire, Bamako is an eminently watchable piece of modern African cinema.

We follow the life of renowned Cuban author Reinaldo Arenas from his childhood to his torture and eventual exile from Castro's Cuba. A man persecuted not just for the power of his writing but also for his homosexuality. Before Night Falls is an immensely affecting film with a quite simply blinding performance from Javier Bardem as the writer.

This excellent documentary follows Billy Bragg as he embarks on a mission to put music to a selection of lyrics penned by folk legend, Woody Guthrie. Billy's love of the People's Troubadour is evident as he visits his home town, tracing Woody's life and influences with the help of his daughter, Nora Guthrie. 'Burma VJ' is an amazing collection of footage shot by Democratic Action for Burma activists as the 2007 popular attempted up-rising against the evil military junta took place and is both about the demonstrations and, more succinctly, about the brave Burman reporters who filmed them and transmitted the footage to the outside world. The resultant edit by Danish film-maker Anders Ostergaard has won more awards than you've had hot pies.

George is a Glaswegian bus-driver, free spirited and pissed off with his job, Carla is an emotionally scarred, impoverished refugee and 2/3rds of this film is an uplifting tale of their romance. The last 1/3rd, in Nicaragua, is where they find their destinies. This is also a savage indictment of US policy.

A monumental history of the Cuban Revolution; from the initial meeting in Mexico between Che and Fidel Castro, through the landing by boat of a few desperadoes, the years of the guerrilla campaign, the gradual build-up from a rag-tag band to a fully fledged revolutionary army, the political alliances and decisions to be made, and the eventual victorious battles over the demotivated Batista led government army.
