Disney come up trumps again, doing what they do best. The fairy tale story adapts beautifully, with some great scenes and excellent (Oscar winning) music. A beautiful elaboration of a Senegalese folk tale; Kirikou summons himself from his mother's womb, only 10 cms tall, but walking, talking, questioning and quickly setting out on a quest to defeat the wicked sorceress who has cursed his people. Kirikou is a beautifully rendered tale with African art as its benchmark and using a flat two-dimensional look. Disney's superb cartoon version of Hans Christian Andersen's famous tale of a beautiful mermaid, who longs to become human after falling in love with a prince whom she saves from drowning. Great animation, especially the underwater scenes, some fun singalong songs, at long last Disney began to recognize the importance of pop in children's movies. All in all a lot better than some of Disney's immediately preceding kids' films. find out more...
