In the middle of the Second World War teenage Alyosha is commended for destroying two German tanks, but, rather than take a medal, he requests a four day pass to visit his mother. Ballad of a Soldier is about this journey and the life enhancing encounters therein. Nominated at the 1962 Academy Awards for Best Screenplay, this classic of post-war Soviet Realism won many international film awards on its release, most notably a BAFTA Award for Best Film.

Narrated via the memoirs of Captain Charles Ryder while stationed at the Brideshead Castle during WWII, we follow his increasingly intense, confused relationship with the aristocratic Flyte family and in particular brother and sister Sebastian and Julia. An impressive if slightly pointless cinematic adaptation of Waugh's classic much better done in the epic television drama.

At first Captain Corelli and his troops are treated with contempt by the islanders but it soon becomes obvious that the two nationalities have much in common and a friendship forms between occupiers and occupied. 1991, Michigan; after years of an empty marriage a WW2 veteran is buried and his daughter delivers a eulogy while her mother, Ethel Ann, sits out on the church porch. Meanwhile a young Ulsterman, excavating the crash of an American B52 bomber, finds a ring and is determined to return it to the woman who once owned it. Back in the past, on the eve of WW2, we find Ethel Ann young, lively, optimistic and in love.

A story set around Czech pilots who flew under the banner of the RAF during the second world war this a visually lush and striking film, though the story itself relies rather too heavily on melodrama, providing as it does a picture of cinematic heroism and love lost that firmly shuns any threat of originality. Dark blue World is by the same director as Kolya and though by no means a bad film it stills leaves you slightly disappointed that he did not do more with the subject he had chosen.

Kline and Judd combine well in this delightful homage to the life and times of Cole and Linda Porter, man and wife, composer and muse, a couple who led a life of glamour and indulged eccentricity. There's no shortage of the man's music, which is unfortunately sometimes murdered by using a series of unsuitable singers; "It's De-Lovely" by Robbie Williams, "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)" by Alanis Morissette, "Begin The Beguine" by Sheryl Crow, "Let's Misbehave" by Elvis Costello, "Be a Clown"

Branagh stars as a wisecracking PI asked to help investigate for a woman with amnesia who is tormented by horrific nightmares. A visit to a psychic confirms that there is a past life connection to a woman murdered by a man remarkably like the detective. Enjoyable but ultimately flawed Hitchcock-style suspense thriller.
