Altman's re-make of Nicholas Ray's They Live by Night, and the second adaptation of Edward Anderson's novel. A trio of half-baked criminals attempt to emulate the organised big-time villains glamorized by the media of 1930s America, but come a cropper after an all-too-short taste of freedom from their rightful place in the county jail. Keith Carradine is the youngest crim, whose love for the farmer's daughter who helps them escape provides the romance in this Depression-based melodrama.
