Madonna doesn't try to steal the show and consequently this turns out to be an excellent film. In 1943, with the males away fighting, The All American Girls' Professional Baseball League was formed to keep the National Baseball League running. Hanks is the real star as the cynical manager/coach who learns to love his team. A comic and touching story highlighting many of the contradictions that working women face. High slush factor.

BRIEF ENCOUNTER (HOWARD/JOHNSON) (1945)
CertificationPG Our Rating
This movie shocked audiences back when it was first released, a sympathetic portrayal of two strangers who meet in a train station and have a non-consumated extramarital affair, was too strong for the times. Written by the equally shocking Noel Coward, this is a classic British melodrama.

CASABLANCA (1942)

Nothing more can be said about this classic melodrama from the peak of the Hollywood studio-film era. Hardened cynic Bogart softens when he meets old flame Bergman who is now a refugee in neutral wartime Casablanca. Together they outwit the Germans... and of course there's that famous song. IN MY COUNTRY (2004)

Essentially an interacial love story betwixt two journalists set against the backdrop of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-apartheid South Africa. There's enough dirt about police murders and torture in the apartheid state to keep whites squirming uncomfortably and enough healing and forgiveness to leave you feeling that race problems dissipate with a bit of a hug. Nevertheless Boorman is a skilled film maker and he manages the finer aspects of this well scripted movie without teet
