Let's be honest, you either love or hate cinema's infamous enfant terrible, Lars von Trier. Those of you who love him you will find ‘Antichrist' his most entertaining and beautifully orchestrated work to date. Layered, witty and wryly tongue-in-cheek at every turn, ‘Antichrist' is brutal, honest and intelligent in both its observation of human emotion and in its exploration of a life riddled with love, loss and psychosis. Those of you who hate him however (and for newcomers who aren't familiar w find out more...

The most perverse Frankenstein flick ever. While the Baron's sister/wife gives the village stud a good going over in her boudoir, the man himself is carving up the locals to create two perfect zombies to spawn a master race. Incest, necrophilia and yards of technicolour entrails. Stomach-churning! find out more...

Minami, a member of the Azamawari crew, highly respects his Aniki (brother) Ozaki who has saved his life in the past. There, the fate of these two follows a twisted path filled with violence, find out more...

A man awakes to find himself squashed into a strange, cramped and maze-like structure. Bleeding from a stomach wound, he begins to explore his prison and to find out where he is and why he is there. Dark, claustrophobic and bloody - Haze is a short, sharp, celluloid shock. find out more...

A grim and harrowing account of the daily life of a serial killer. If you can stomach the violence, it is well worth watching. The main criticism is that things are seen only from one point of view, which can be limiting. Now available uncut. find out more...

Playing against time, like Memento, this is a gut wrenching exploration of an horrific act of indiscriminate brutality and the vicious revenge that is its consequence. Irreversible is an exceptionally powerful movie and one of the most disturbing pieces of cinema I've ever seen (the tortuously protracted rape scene would have Ghandi screaming for the death penalty). Awesome....but you have been warned. find out more...

Susan's life is all artifice. When her ex-husband sends her his new novel, she discovers his festering misogyny anew. A violent thriller wrapped within a story about empty souls and hateful people, violence is everywhere in Tom Ford's new nightmare, Nocturnal Animals. Beautifully styled and composed, the setting is stunning even if the material is horrific.

Guillermo Del Toro's blockbusting tale of a young girl struggling to make sense of the violent world around her was a big 2006 arthouse hit. Continuing his exploration of the impact of the Spanish Civil War on his generation (it was also the backdrop for his excellent ghost story, The Devil's Backbone) Del Toro's fantasy mixes strong horror with fairytale-style aesthetics to great effect, making Ofelia's escape into an imaginary realm a poignant response to the cruel realities of her existence. find out more...

The film follows the cool, emotionless Erica, who dives into bed with any man she meets. When she is offered a job in a DIY store in Austin, she discovers the kindness of strangers, but also the gruesome shadowy side of it when she hooks up with a sociopathic Iraq war veteran.
Another bleak and obscure indie offering from Britain's own Simon Rumley. Maybe this shocking film will give him the recognition he deserves after working on the sidelines for so long!
