Bob Crane was the star of the hugely successful 1960s TV series "Hogan's Heroes", a man of fine upstanding character until he's befriended by a svengali-like video technician. Together the two men embark on an increasingly dark journey of sexual hedonism that leaves Crane increasingly estranged from reality and, ultimately, dead. What if man could create true AI? Would it use human qualities to rebel against its maker? Re-treading old ground, Ex_Machina looks at the moral and ethical questions behind 'creating' and 'killing' not quite organic organisms. The gender and 'god complex' stuff is pretty basic but it fares well enough as popcorn fodder. Performances from Gleeson and Isaacs are good and for those who like their robots realistic, Vikander's none too shabby. There's also a stylish dance sequence.
