Menna is on the cusp of teenagedom and eager to sample her naive interpretations of adulthood, but this is the 1970s and she's a young Asian lass living in a small Midlands mining town...so you take what you can get when it comes to role models and for Meena it's the oldest daughter of her spectacularly dysfunctional next door neighbours. Like Bend It Like Beckham Anita and Me is a film of a young girl establishing her identity in conflict with the Asian values of her parents, though in this case we have more of a coming of age comedy drama and less of a romantic comedy. A thoroughly delightful tale with many wonderful peripheral characters and some wicked one-liners.
