Frannie is a reclusive woman living within the frantic bustle of Manhattan, but after the brutal murder of her neighbour Frannie finds herself seduced by a darker world of passion and desire at complete odds with the life she has created for herself. Drawn into the murder investigation, Frannie finds herself in some way linked to the killer, and as the body count mounts she begins to suspect her new lover (the investigating detective) may be hiding something sinister. In The Cut is directed by Jane Campion and along with its star this is a radical departure for both women, a tense, dark and erotic thriller, it has plenty of visual style, but the plot provides nothing new, and kit on or kit off Meg Ryan just doesn't really convince. Sadly contrived and predictable for someone with Campion's undoubted talent.
