Rennie Cray (Jim Caviezel) has suffered the loss of his wife in a hit-and-run accident. The man responsible is a psychopathic, disabled madman called Fargo, who has turned his car into an intimidating extension of his own body. Rennie has taken it upon himself to track down his wife's killer (reminiscent of the husband's plight in the excellent ‘The Vanishing') and has been driving the American roads for 5 years looking for him. He teams up with a lady who had a near-miss with Fargo in a road tunnel pile up, and together they have a crack at taking the man down. With a clear nod towards the fetishist behaviour men often show towards their cars, ‘Highwaymen' provides an exciting addition to the road movie, in the tradition of asphalt classics like Duel and Mad Max. A surprisingly effective chase movie.
