A stressed out executive takes his wife and young child to the wilderness of upstate New York. However before they have even reached their destination a show-down between their 4X4 and a rather large deer puts them at loggerheads with a local hunter, a danger that becomes more acute with the discovery of bullet holes in the walls of the cabin they're staying in. Add to this the brooding menace of the North American half-beast, half-phantom of the title and you've got a beautifully shot, understated chiller that uses suggestion and evocative imagery to manipulate the audience instead of hand feeding us the plot, line by line.
