In the near future man faces an environmental doom that is actually not of his making, the sun is dying. It is decided that the only solution to the crisis is to send a space ship deep into the solar system and detonate a massive nuclear device that has the potential to reignite the golden globe. Following in the failed footsteps of a previous crew the mismatched cosmonauts soon begin to fall foul of the cruel, unfathomless nature of space. 'Sunshine' is a feast for the eyes and, for three quarters of the film, an intelligent, absorbing and contemplative journey, it is only with the arrival of a completely unexplained and unjustified ‘baddie' that everything goes a bit pear-shaped, though the glorious pyrotechnics very nearly succeed in distracting you.
