The story begins in Sicily at the start of the 20th century. Salvatore, a poor farmer, and a widower, decides to immigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother, but before embarking they meet Lucy, purportedly a British lady who merely wishes to return to the States. Lucy is looking to marry before her arrival at Ellis Island and Salvatore honourably agrees; but on arrival at New York's gates to the ‘new world' the stringent exams for entrance to the US proves an immense and frightening hurdle for the innocently naive Sicilians.
