Tomo's a Nottingham lad who's spent most of his young life in social care; reaching sixteen he takes the opportunity to escape his miserable roots and legs it to London. At first it would seem to be a bad move, but when Tomo meets Marek, a naïve and sensitive Polish immigrant living with his emotionally distant dad, an unlikely relationship blossoms between the two, each sub-consciously seeing in the other a lost soul searching for sense and belonging. Written by Paul Fraser, long time collaborator of director Shane Meadows, Somers Town originally started life as a low-fi black and white short, and while the first two still apply, the running time now hovers close to feature length. This is a delightfully simple tale that plays with the uncomplicated honesty of an exceptional documentary; not ‘coming of age', more an unaffected snap shot, the performances from the four leads are in turn funny, farcical, touching, bewildered and utterly convincing.
