South Carolina, 1964; Lily Owens is a young girl haunted by the memory of her mother, who died in an accident when she was just a toddler. When Rosaleen, a woman hired by her father to look after Lily, insults a pivotal town figure, she and Lily are forced to flee and find a new home. On their journey they come across August, who takes them in on the simple proviso that they help out on her farm.
