Bertrand Tavernier’s adaptation of Madame de la Fayette’s historical novel is a ravishing experience and has been cropping up in many critics’ Top 10 lists for 2011. Marie de Mezieres is in love with her cousin Henri de Guise, but is thrust into a marriage of convenience with the well-positioned Philippe de Montpensier. When he is called for battle, she is charged with looking after the elderly Count Chabannes, whose cynicism and world-weary wit provide succour to the princess, as she becomes drawn into the sexual politics of court life.

While it lacks the blood and grime of Patrice Chereau’s ‘La Reine Margot’, this tale of love, sex and war is as beautiful to look at as it is joyous to watch. Take a break from 21st Century Britain, and take a holiday in 17th Century France!
