Distictly stylised and very Japanese adaptation of Maxim. Gorky's novel about the flotsam of society who wash up at a dosshouse, and the live on idealistic dreams. Technically superb film, with extended shots, and marvellous use of the claustrophobic sets. Rich and masterful drama.
