He arrives in Jamaica to meet his intended wife, for the first time, and is plunged into a world of intense passions and magic that he cannot control. A fanciful, sensuous bodice ripper with some beautiful scenery. (For the literati the book is often taught as a postmodern and postcolonial response to Jane Eyre!!)
