An ageing man forsakes his wife for a younger woman, trying to turn a casual affair with an air hostess into the love of his life, but succeeds only in incurring the wrath of his betrothed. Almost Hitchcockian in places Truffaut's talent is to highlight the ironic contrast of wife and mistress, and to capture the emotion unerringly.
