Gere is both metaphorically as well as literally at a crossroads in this film, having to decide between wife (Stone) & mistress (Davidovich). (Its a tough life, Rich!) Suddenly fate steps in and stops him having to decide anyway. I could now go on about the road as symbol for lifes journey...but..
