Based on Ross MacDonald's novel "The Moving Target". Newman plays the skint but sharp-suited private dick hired to find a missing husband, but the path to the wayward millionaire is littered with baffling obstacles and bruising encounters. Moody, gripping mystery with rapid-fire dialogue.
