A different perspective on Herzog's 1974 work. Shortly after his birth, Kaspar, son of Crown Prince Karl of Baden, is exchanged with a dying baby by Karl's scheming brother Ludwig, who has ambitions for the throne. The child is hidden away in a cellar for 12 years and, on his release, unable to talk, walk or fend for himself, he's taken under the wing of Prof Daumer, whose efforts to educate and protect the lad ignore the fact that his charge is political dynamite, a disposable pawn in Machiavellian power games between and within German states.
