Review
Part of a string of xenophobic cold war thrillers which became a massively popular genre during the 1980s. Three American students, enjoying their democratic right to get drunk in Finland, decide to make a daring foray into Russkie territory, only to be busted. What follows is a violent drama involving torture, including a human chess match, shoot-outs, a token love interest and various escape attempts. The Finnish backdrop is pretty though, and the snarling Russians have never looked so barbaric, or hairy. Here's what one reviewer on IMDB.com had to say: "This film makes me want to stay home and thank God every day that I live in such a wonderful country. Even the good guy turned out to be a bad guy in "Born American". Shook me to my foundations." Thanks to Duncan of Oklahoma for that insight.
