LA Confidential meets Short Cuts in Wim Wender's latest tour-de-force. Off film successful hard working Hollywood producer Mike Max, Pullman at his laconic best, meets guilt-ridden government defence scientist Ray, Byrne at his mogadonic worst, at a hi-tech conference, and the lives of both are radically altered. On screen, a murder attempt on Max fails the same day as his wife tells him she's dumping him, Ray spies on the world, and a young copper chases gorgeous wannabe Cat. Stylish, clever, but not half as much as it thinks it is, with a dash of bleeding-edge technology thrown in. Well worth a spin for anyone at least half-cerebral.
