Kurosawa's social commentary, made at the height of the cold war, is his least commercially successful film, lacking the vibrant energy of "Seven Samurai" and "Throne of Blood", but it's a blistering indictment of society's complacency in the face of possible disaster. Mifune is the ageing head of a Tokyo family who, convinced of the imminence of nuclear war, decides to sell the family business and move them all to Brazil.
